What will you be doing this National Children's Day?

May 12, 2017

It's National Children's Day this Sunday. What will you be doing to celebrate the importance of a healthy childhood?

Organisers of this annual event want to draw focus on protecting the rights and freedoms of children so that they can grow into happy, healthy adults. Putting the wellbeing of children at the forefront of society guarantees a brighter and better future for everyone, which is why engaging with our kids, spending lots of quality time with them and doing fun things together is so important.

There'll be lots of events running across the country, big and small, that you can participate in as part of the celebrations but even the smallest of activities done at home with your tot or teenager will make a difference to their physical and mental health. Try to ditch those digital devices for the day and do something different that boosts your child's imagination and leaves room for lots of discussion afterwards. Here are some simple ideas:

  1. Play footie in the park
  2. Make your own kite
  3. Explore the woods and take a along a picnic in a backpack
  4. Devise a treasure hunt
  5. Build a bird feeder
  6. Go to the swimming pool
  7. Hit the beach and make sandcastles
  8. Make a fort in your living room with pillows and bed sheets
  9. Camp out in the garden
  10. Pull your bikes out from the garage and go for a ride
  11. Grab a sponge and a bucket and wash the car
  12. Prep a family meal that the kid's can really get stuck in with
  13. Bake a cake or make a special dessert that you can share after dinner
