Reasons to throw a surprise baby shower

May 27, 2016

Traditionally more of an American custom, baby showers are becoming more popular in the UK. They're usually organised by a friend of the family or a close relative of the mummy-to-be and provide an opportunity for people to get together before the birth to celebrate. Normally it tends to be a women-only event but there's no reason why you can't invite dad and his friends too.

If you're still on the fence about throwing a surprise shower here are some reasons to get the baby ball rolling:

  1. Take the chance to celebrate with lots of good food and laughter! It's not every day that your friend has a baby so why not seize the opportunity to kick up your heels?
  2. Give the parents-to-be a last hurrah before they get bogged down with night feeds and nappies!
  3. Help a soon-to-be-mama with prepping for the new arrival by creating gift baskets with baby essentials, like babygrows, lotion and blankets.
  4. Treat mum to some indulgent skincare products, such as this New Mama's Survival Kit or Pregnancy 'Must Have' gift set, which will help to strengthen and soften her skin until the birth and beyond.
  5. If mum has started maternity leave, a baby shower will give her colleagues the chance to see her again before the baby arrives.
  6. A baby shower doesn't have to be formal and perfectly organised so don't feel like you have to create a spectacular event! A small get together is more than enough to show mama that you care.
