Reasons baby keeps waking up

April 11, 2016

Lack of sleep can take it's toll on your body and your mood but it's awfully challenging to get your alotted 40 winks when you have a newborn baby to care for. It can also feel like your baby is the only one not sleeping when the reality is that the majority of parents are suffering through the same thing.  If your little one is waking regularly during the night here are some of the reasons why:

  1. Hunger is a big one! Newborn babies have tiny tummies so they get full very quickly on the smallest amount of milk. However, they also need to be refueled regularly and will wake every three to four hours for a feed.
  2. Many babies have trouble with gas during the night. Try to burp your baby after a feed to prevent them waking up 30 minutes later because of uncomfortable trapped wind. If you're breastfeeding you may find that the foods you've eaten, such as cauliflower or beans, are making your baby feel much more gassy. Steer clear of these foods if burping and trapped wind is becoming a real problem for your baby.
  3. Acid reflux can also make a baby feel uncomfortable during the night and cause them to wake up almost as soon as they've nodded off. Lots of babies bring up their milk after a feed because their oesophagus is still developing. In most cases you can solve this by reducing the amount of milk you feed your baby, burping baby regularly and holding baby upright for a while before laying them down to sleep.
  4. Teething pain can keep a baby up as well as tummy ache, colds and coughs. Check that your bubba isn't under the weather and doesn't need a touch of medicine before putting it down to hunger or a dirty nappy.
  5. They miss you! Just like us adults babies like hugs (and a cuddle from mummy is especially calming and soothing). Snuggling up to mama helps a baby to feel secure and safe.

Remember that this stage won't last forever; it's just a temporary thing. And even though it might seem like there's no light at the end of the tunnel we promise you there is!
