Natural remedies for cracked heels

August 18, 2016

Sore and painful cracked heels are particularly common skin complaint in the summer because of footwear changes. Wearing flip flops and sandals that rub the area around the edge of the heels can cause them to become dry and create minor cracks that feel tender. Walking barefooted can also dry out the soles of the feet and make them look unsightly.

Some of the other causes of cracked heels include:

  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes
  • Increased pressure on the heels due to weight gain
  • Standing up for long periods of time
  • The cold weather, which removes moisture from the atmosphere
  • A poor diet
  • Circulation problems

Natural ways to treat cracked heels

  1. Soak your feet in warm water to soften the dead skin cells on your heels before using a pumice stone to gently scrub off the dry areas.
  2. Pat your feet dry and apply a rich moisturiser all over the heels and soles of the feet to soften and soothe.
  3. Mama's Everything Body Balm makes the perfect treatment for cracked heels because of its luxurious texture. A combination of Shea Butter and natural oils, this healing salve is free from additives and alcohol, which can exacerbate dryness and stinging, so it's the number one choice for people suffering with sensitive skin.
  4. Put a pair of cotton socks on immediately after application to create the perfect conditions for the product to soak into the skin and work its moisturising magic.

Try to moisturise your feet daily to prevent cracked heels from occurring again. Exfoliating every few days can also help to remove dead skin cells and keep the feet looking soft and smooth. Always remember to follow-up with a moisturiser to give your tootsies the TLC they deserve.
