Easy breastfeeding snack ideas

Lots of new mums feel ravenous when they first begin to breastfeed. This is because the body is producing milk for the first time and requires more energy. It's also normal to feel extra hungry because you're waking up throughout the night for night feeds and you have a new baby to care for 24/7.

Here are some quick and easy snack ideas to help you keep going when you're breastfeeding:

  • Simple snacks that you can eat with one hand are ideal when you're nursing your baby. Try fruits like bananas, apples and grapes that take zero prep. Chop up cubes of cheese for instant savoury protein.
  • Put dry foods like crackers, granola and rice cakes by your bedside for when you feel hungry during night feeds. Bags of peanuts and cashews are ideal too because just a handful contain lots of energy. Pluse these foods have a long shelf life and you can store them in your bedside cabinet during the day.
  • Celery sticks filled with peanut or almond butter are perfect for snacking on too as well as crudites like chopped carrots and peppers that you can pre-prep and pop in the fridge. Dip them in humous or salsa. 
  • Slices of malt loaf contain lots of energy and they're delicious to boot! 
  • Drink plenty of water as this can hep your body to produce a steady milk flow. However, try to avoid drinking any hot beverages like tea and coffee while breastfeeding because you could accidentally spill them on baby.
