Coping with morning sickness at work

December 9, 2016

Morning sickness can make work feel like a real slog at its best and downright impossible at its worst. So what can you do to get through the day, especially if you're not ready to tell your bosses about your pregnancy and are reluctant to take time off?

Here are some simple ideas to dampen down the worst of your morning sickness during work hours:

Eat little and often

Although you might feel too nauseaus to eat, you must try to eat something every few hours to keep your blood sugar levels steady. Hunger will make your morning sickness feel worse. Opt for dry foods, like crackers or even mild-flavoured crisps, to keep nausea at bay and prevent heartburn. Sip water throughout the day to avoid dehydration.

Take each hour at a time

Breaking up the day into manageable segments can help you to concentrate and focus on a single task. Try to get through the next hour instead of the entire working day and you might find that you start to feel better.

Sip on herbal teas

Chamomile, peppermint, ginger and green teas are wonderful for settling an upset stomach. The fresh scent can also cut through the heaviness of nausea and give you some respite.

Switch to unscented skincare products

Lots of women find that their morning sickness is triggered by certain smells, like their partner's cologne or even a favourite perfume. Stop using perfumed products and see if that helps. Our unscented soap and body balm are perfect for pregnancy and have a natural fragrance.

Go for a walk

Walk outside on your lunch break to get away from the office heating system. Air conditioning dries out the air and can trigger nausea so taking a break from your desk might alleviate your symptoms.

Take time off

If your morning sickness has become severe take a sick day! You're entitled to the same sickness benefits as every other employee so don't feel guilty about it. A day or two of rest will allow you to recuperate and come back to the office feeling much better -- it's a better solution in the long run and your body will thank you for it.
