17 ways to keep eczema at bay

If eczema is left untreated, it can become sore and infected. Here's how to manage that itch and prevent it from spreading:

  1. Take quick showers in warm, rather than hot, water to avoid drying out your skin. If you can, try to shower every other day to give your skin's natural oils time to recuperate.
  2. Avoid scented bath products and harsh shower gels that contain synthetic ingredients.
  3. Choose a rich moisturiser, like Baby's Everything Body Balm, to create a nourishing seal over the skin that instantly soothes and protects dry areas, like the elbows, knees and back of the legs.
  4. Apply moisturiser on damp skin to lock in extra water...
  5. And continue to reapply it as necessary throughout the day.
  6. Wear clothing made of natural fibres, like cotton and linen.
  7. Steer clear of air-conditioned spaces and wrap up warm if heading out in the cold weather.
  8. Switch to natural cleaning products...
  9. And wear cotton gloves underneath your rubber gloves to keep your hands dry.
  10. Avoid stress!
  11. Make time to relax and do the things you enjoy doing.
  12. Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Even tea and coffee count but try to keep your caffeine intake to a minimum.
  13. Slather on moisturiser before bed.
  14. Use a mild face cleanser to remove make-up.
  15. Keep your room cool at night. Perspiration can irritate eczema and increase the itch.
  16. Give your skin room to breathe e.g. if eczema has developed on your arms wear short-sleeved pjs.
  17. Ditch bed sheets made of polyester and opt for cotton covers.
